A valve is a device, which regulates or redirects the flow of fluids, gases, or slurries. This is done by opening, closing, or partially obstructing certain passages. They are essential components of a system, which are available in different categories.

What is instrumentation ball valve?

It utilizes a hollow, perforated, and pivoting ball to control flow characteristics. There are 4 types of valves in this grade namely full, standard, reduced, and V port valves.

  • Full port valve- This element is produced using an oversized ball, which is similar in size to a pipeline. The resulting lower friction allows the flow to be unrestricted. The size of the valve has to be slightly bigger.
  • Standard port valve- These components have a smaller ball size along with a smaller port size. These cost-effective items have slightly restricted flow characteristics.
  • Reduced port valve- In this category, the ball flows through a valve, which is one pipe smaller than the pipe valve. This size results in restricted flow.
  • V port valves- The items in this range have a V-shaped seat, which allows the orifice to be opened and closed in a controlled manner. 

Why do ball valves fail?

These components fail due to a combination of factors, which will eventually lead to its undoing. Below are a few factors that may affect them.

  • Poorly selected valve model.
  • Undetected damage caused to the module during transportation.
  • Poor installation procedures.
  • No proper maintenance or repairs.
  • Abrasive particles may be enclosed in its seals. This will lead to scratched grooves preventing the ball from sealing properly.
  • Erosion and overworking of the valves in different applications.
  • Low-quality repairs in the refurbished parts.
  • Wearing down after long years of service.

What is difference between ball and butterfly valve?

Both these components follow the simplest mechanism for operation. They are widely used in domestic, commercial, and industrial applications to control the flow of fluids. There are some contrasting features, which set them apart from each other.

  • Weight and size- Butterfly pipes are lighter in weight and are suitable for larger diameter pipes. However, the ball valve check is heavier and utilized for smaller pipes.
  • Connection style- A unit of the ball section can be connected using different types of threads or flanges. While the other valve can only be connected using a lug or water design.
  • Operating condition- A ball member valve can operate at extreme pressures and temperatures while the other is designed for lower pressure/temperature systems.
  • Sealing- Valves of ball units provide a tight seal with zero leakages while the latter is susceptible to leakage.
  • Ports- A butterfly system has only 2 ports, while a ball unit exhibits many ports.
  • Price- The butterfly valvelet is cheaper in comparison to the latter.

Why are ball valves so expensive?

These components exhibit a special opening and closing system making, them an ideal option for shutoff applications. Their consistent performance with excellent reliability allows them to be secured for long periods. 

Can it leak?

This is highly unlikely but, there are instances where these components leak. This may be due to several factors ranging from in-built defects or certain working conditions that may affect it. Utilizing a component for long periods may also lead to leakage.

How do you tell if it is open or closed?

Determining whether these components are open or closed is a simple process. If the handle is parallel to the valve, it is closed. In instances when the handle is placed perpendicular to the valve it is open.

How much does it cost to replace a ball valve?

The components in this grade are expensive due to the unique properties and materials used in producing them. Replacing one of these components costs around $200 to $250, depending on different material choices.
